Awards were presented in 18 categories with schools competing against institutions of similar size and conference affiliation. UC Irvine earned two first-place honors, and two second-place awards. More than 700 entries were judged by corporate marketing personnel. UC Irvine earned top honors for Best Single Newspaper Display Ad and Best Activation Program with a Sponsor. Categories for the two second-place awards were, Best Online Promotion and Best Sponsor Follow-Up Report. The judges for the competition were Chris Caldwell (Gatorade), John Egan (Coca-Cola), Paula Grooms (IMG), Matt Pensinger (General Motors) and Bruce Skinner (Former Executive Director, Fiesta Bowl). "Again, these honors are attributed to a great group of staff and interns we have in Anteater Sports Marketing", says Assistant Athletic Director for Marketing & Promotions, Blake Sasaki. "They are all passionate about UC Irvine Athletics and it shows in their work".
The NACMA Awards are in their third year and are given for outstanding achievement in marketing and promotions. June 28, 2004 UCI ATHLETIC MARKETING WINS 2 NATIONAL AWARDS Cleveland, Ohio – The UC Irvine Athletic Marketing Department took home two first-place awards this year from the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA). UCI's 2003-04 awards were in the following categories: Best Single-Day Attendance Promotion for basketball and Best Targeted Group Promotion for basketball. "This is a great honor to receive these awards," said Blake Sasaki, UCI's Assistant Athletic Director, Marketing & Promotions. "It's just an outstanding tribute to my staff and the support of our administration at this university. We are thrilled that we can represent UC Irvine Athletics on this national stage." The single-day promotion involved elementary students in the Capistrano Unified School District. An estimated 1,500 children from that district received free tickets to the UCI-Cal State Northridge men's basketball game Feb. 7 and their math skills were tested. The kids had to compile the first-half shooting percentages for each team and the successful students received extra credit from their school and a basketball T-shirt from the UCI Athletics Department. The targeted group promotion entailed UCI faculty and staff competing in a halftime free-throw shooting contest at the UCI-Long Beach State men's basketball game Feb. 18. Eight five-member teams attempted free throws for 60 seconds and the winning team received a trophy and a pizza party. Initiated in 2003, the NACMA Awards program honors outstanding achievement in marketing and promotions. Awards are presented in 19 categories, and each category is broken down into three budgets, Category 1: Under $50,000; Category 2: $50,000-$150,000; and Category 3: Over $150,000. The budget breakdowns are based on the athletics departments' total marketing budget, excluding staff salaries and benefits. UCI received its awards in Category 1. The panel of executives and marketing personnel from corporations and athletics departments who judged the 619 entries included Deena Diboll, Fresno State; Audrey Lincoff, Starbucks Coffee Company; John Pleas, Xbox; Bruce Skinner, Former Executive Director, Fiesta Bowl. The winners were announced during the 13th Annual NACMA Workshop at the Wyndham Anatole Hotel in Dallas, Tex., June 11-14. The awards ceremony took place June 11. NACMA is the first organization of its kind to provide educational and networking opportunities, enhancement of acceptable operating standards and ethics, and establishment of the overall prestige and understanding of the profession of athletics marketing administrators. ![]()
