UCI Women 3rd, Men 5th at Big West ChampionshipsOct. 27, 2007

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. --- The UC Irvine women's team finished third in a tightly-bunched race Saturday at the Big West Conference Cross Country Championships in San Luis Obispo. UC Santa Barbara capitalized on a 1-2 finish by Megan Lewis (21:16.0) and Bethany Nickless (21:35.6) to capture its second straight title with 44 points. UC Riverside was second with 57 points and UCI third with 59. Anteater junior Laura Olvera placed third with a time of 21:45.8 over 6,000 meters at the Fairbanks Memorial Course. Junior Candice Proctor finished 10th in 22:24.8 to join Olvera on the all-conference team. Junior Samantha Costantini just missed all-league recognition with an 11th-place finish of 22:26.9 and senior Sara Mickelson was 12th in 22:31.0. Freshman Katherine Nielsen placed 23rd (22:59.3), junior Lauren Chramosta 38th (23:36.6), senior Amber Gordon 40th (23:51.6), and juniors Meryl Follosco (23:59.2) and Kendall Bruton (24:01.8) finished 43rd and 44th, respectively. Cal Poly won its fifth consecutive men's title with 15 points as the Mustangs claimed the top five individual spots. UC Santa Barbara finished second with 53 points, UC Riverside was third with 79, Long Beach State fourth with 134 and UCI fifth with 137. Phillip Reid led the Cal Poly sweep in the men's 8,000-meter race with a time of 25:12.4. Junior Nick Mosey had the Anteaters' top finish in 19th place in 26:18.0 while senior Sky Johnston placed 20th in 26:19.4. Sophomore Colin Hacker was 26th (26:37.5), sophomore Bryan Lopez 36th (27:04.0), senior Adrian Doty 46th (27:33.4), sophomore Rusty Whisman 48th (27:36.5) and senior George Morris placed 50th in 27:41.9. Freshman Victor Bonilla finished 53rd in 27:51.5 and junior Greg Thompson was 57th in 28:24.0. Both UCI teams compete in the NCAA West Regional Nov. 10 at Eugene, Ore. |
