NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- Junior All-American Scott Gorgen struck out 10 batters and held Cal State Northridge to a lone run to lead UC Irvine to a 4-1 Big West win Friday at Matador Field. With the win, UCI climbed to 7-6 in league play (29-11 overall) while the Matadors dropped to 19-23 (5-11) overall.

Gorgen held Cal State Northridge to three hits before surrendering a solo home run to DeMarco in the Matador eighth that cut UCI's lead to 2-1. The right-hander hurled 8.1 innings, walked two and scattered four hits in the winning effort. Gorgen, who improved to 9-2 with the win, is now just three strikeouts shy of the UCI career record with 296.

Eric Deragisch tripled in the first run of the day in the top of the second, capitalizing on a one-out single by Francis Larson. Tony Asaro then staked the Anteaters to a 2-0 lead, hitting the first pitch from Davin Tate over the centerfield wall to lead off the fourth.

Catcher Aaron Lowenstein gave UCI some breathing room in the top of the ninth with his first collegiate home run, a two-run shot over the left-centerfield wall to plate Deragisch for a 4-1 Anteater lead.

After Gorgen retired the first batter in the bottom of the ninth, Cal State Northridge loaded the bases against closer Eric Pettis on two walks and a single but the right-hander struck out pinch hitter Matt Warr to end the game.

Larson was 3 for 4 with a run scored to lead UCI while Deragisch and Lowenstein added two hits and two runs batted in, respectively.

Tate dropped to 2-3 with the loss after giving up two runs on seven hits in six innings.

The series continues Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
