FIVE
UCI RECRUITS DRAFTED:
Five student-athletes who signed national letters of
intent with the UC Irvine baseball program have been
chosen in the 2001 Major League draft. Jake Woods, a
lefthanded pitcher from Bakersfield College, was selected
in the third round by the Anaheim Angels. Danny Kahr,
a catcher from Durango High School in Las Vegas, was
picked in the 12th round by the Montreal Expos. Brett
Smith, a righthanded pitcher/infielder from Sonora High
in La Habra, was a 21st-round selection of the Arizona
Diamondbacks. Jaime Martinez, a first baseman from Hueneme
High School in
Oxnard, was a 38th-round pick of the Phillies. Jordan
Szabo, an outfielder from Carlsbad High School, was
a 46th-round choice of the Milwaukee Brewers. In addition,
Kurt Birkins, a lefthanded pitcher from Pierce College,
signed with the Baltimore Orioles in May. He was a 33rd-round
draft choice of the Orioles last year and reportedly
received a $395,000 signing bonus, according to the
Los Angeles Times.

IRVINE BASEBALL SIGNS Chris Nicoll TO LETTER OF INTENT
IRVINE, CA ---
Head coach John Savage announced the signing of Chris
Nicoll to a national letter of intent with the UC Irvine
baseball program.
CHRIS
NICOLL RHP 6-1 180 Righetti High School/Santa Maria,
CA
Was
5-3 as a senior with 2.20 ERA and 60 strikeouts in 60
innings pitched...was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays
in the 43rd round of the 2002 Major League Baseball
Draft...three-time All-Northern League honoree...three-time
team Pitcher of the Year...three-time scholar-athlete.
"Chris has a chance to be a legitimate impact Division
I pitcher," Savage said. "The combination of a good
live fastball and a sharp breaking ball makes Chris
a candidate for innings as a freshman. He has a tremendous
future at UC Irvine."
Nicoll
joins the recruiting class of Cody Haerther (Chatworth,
CA/Chaminade Prep), Mark Wagner (Lakewood, CA/Mayfair
HS), Warren Chenier (Huntington Beach, CA/Mater Dei
HS), Ryan Edell (Lexington, MA/Lexington HS), Kris Krise
(Crescenta Valley, CA/Crescenta Valley HS), Matt Millett
(Redlands, CA/East Valley Redlands HS), Gary Dudrey
(Riverside, CA/ Arlington HS) Marvin Lowrance (Whittier,
CA/Long Beach Wilson HS) and Matt Falk (San Juan Capistrano,
CA/Dana Hills HS) who signed earlier with the Anteaters.
Five players in the 2003 recruiting class were selected
in the 2002 Major League Baseball Draft.

HEATING UP NORTHWOODS LEAGUE WITH .412 BATTING AVERAGE
UCI
first baseman Matt Anderson, currently of the Alexandria
Beetles, is sporting a Northwoods League-leading .412
batting average. The Beetles' designated hitter leads
the team in batting average, hits and runs batted in,
and is second in runs.
RIGHTHANDER
Sean Tracey AND CATCHER CHRIS MILLER SIGN WITH RESPECTIVE
CLUBS
Pitcher Sean Tracey signed a professional contract
with the Chicago White Sox and is now a member of the
Kannapolis Intimidators, a minor league team in Kannapoli,

Catcher
Chris Miller signed a contract with the Chicago Cubs
and will compete in the Arizona League.

TRACEY,
MILLER DRAFTED IN 2002 MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL DRAFT
IRVINE, CA ---
UC Irvine junior pitcher Sean Tracey and junior catcher
Chris Miller were drafted in the 2002 Major League Baseball
draft Tuesday.
Tracey
was picked in the eighth round and was the 240th overall
pick by the Chicago White Sox, while Miller was selected
as the 333rd overall pick in the 12th round by the Chicago
Cubs.
Tracey,
a righthander out of Upland, Calif. (Citrus College/Upland
HS), gave the team 17 starts this season. He ended the
regular season as the team's strikeout leader with 96,
pitching 106.2 innings to lead the squad. The 6'3" junior
struck out 10 batters in a game twice for team and individual
highs. Tracey finished 8-7 on the season with a 4.44
ERA, averaging 8.1 strikeouts per game.
Tracey's
longest stint on the mound was an eight-inning performance
against St. Mary's, recording his second win after giving
up two runs on four hits and striking out ten. Tracey
also gave UCI three innings in relief, appearing against
UNLV and San Diego State.
Miller,
out of Long Beach, Calif. (Cuesta College/Long Beach
Wilson HS), earned a spot on the Big West All-Conference
second team after leading the Anteaters with 12 home
runs, 19 doubles, 14 multiple-RBI games 129 and total
bases. Miller was also awarded the regular season's
last conference Player of the Week honors after hitting
.500 in the season's final series against UC Riverside.
Miller's
12 home runs set a new UCI single-season record, previously
held by Bryant Winslow (1991) and tied the seventh spot
in UCI's career record book for home runs. The junior
ended the regular season tied for fifth on the squad
with a .311 batting average and led the starters with
a .542 slugging percentage. He hit three doubles in
a single game twice for a personal best.
