From the Launch
March 2007 What a difference a few weeks can make. The Novice women are no longer the same crew. Like any novice team they have tons to work on technically. What has changed so dramatically is the attitude. They now attack every stroke. They lost both of the first 2 races of the season but never gave up. They raced every stroke like they where 10 strokes from the line. The 15k erg sessions have started and you can already see the improved fitness. I am excited to see how this group finishes the season and am now really enjoying the journey. The Novice men lost a close race to UCSD and the following week beat SDSU and LMU. They are as aggressive and hungry as ever and have their eyes on the prize. The technique is improving each week and they are starting to have some balance. The biggest improvements have come from the 2N8. This past week they raced against 2 first eight’s and managed to stay close before fading in the last 250 meters. The varsity guys are playing a very serious game of musical chairs at this time. LMU is in Newport for spring break so we where able to do a scrimmage with them and I used the opportunity to make some switches. They still crushed us but it was great training and I did see some things that might make the eight faster. Having the guys row both sides in the fall is now beginning to pay off as we try to come up with the best combination. Having the eight strongest guys in the eight is just not working, so we are moving some of them around to come up with a cohesive unit. Nine individuals do not work. This is the ultimate team sport. The right combination is out there and I hope we can find it by spring break. Out, Scott
