From the Launch

October 2006

It's Tuesday, October 18 and I just got off the water after coaching the morning session of Novice Men and Women. This is their third day on the water and I am impressed at how well it is going. The Women are small but are picking up the technique quickly. The Guy's are of decent size but a bit rough. Both groups pull very hard. There are still about 20 athletes that have not yet cleared to participate but should be ready to go by Friday. We have a long way to go but I can already see that we will have some competitive boats this season.

The Varsity Men's roster is down from 34 to 25 and we are currently nursing 3 or 4 injuries. Almost every guy on the team was in the top boat as a Novice so we have depth through at least 18. At this point there are only 1 or 2 that stick out as having a lock on the V8. We put out 2 eight's and a pair most days. We have been working hard to balance technique with hard work and at the end of our fourth week begin to find that balance. Rowing as a team only 3 day's a week has made it possible to row with very high intensity, one that I don't believe is possible every day. The individual workouts are for the most part left to the honor system and could be a weakness if not kept up. Each training session is done at full intensity at 16 strokes per minute by sixes and only the last 15 minutes are done by eight's. The balance will come slowly but the power is really starting to show. The weight room intensity is high and has helped add to the overall positive mood on and off the water. With a bit more focus on doing the lunges, bench pulls and sit ups with purpose we will be right on track. I am excited to see how the fall racing goes. It should give us an idea of what is possible this season.
