From the Launch
November 2006 It's now mid November and for the most part our Head Racing season is over. The Novice Men and Women raced at NARF and performed as expected considering they rowed by eight for the first time the day before the race. Many of the parents came to the event and enjoyed a continental breakfast at the boathouse after the racing. The group is getting the rowing bug and really starting to take to the training. Erg sessions at the ARC and runs to the boathouse to do bench pulls and technique on the dock machine are now becoming common. The next and last event for the Novice will be the Newport Sprints on December 3. I am both nervous and excited about how the Varsity Men performed in our Head Races. They showed we are on track for a competitive season as long as the wheels don't come off. I had the opportunity to race in an eight with the guy's at the Head of the American. The experience brought me back to my college days. The course and weather where great and we had an awesome time battling with Stanford. They eventually rowed through us and went on to win the event. Davis placed second and we placed third. At NARF the guy's tied for fourth with OCC behind Davis, USC and UCSD. The second eight did well placing ahead of OCC's second eight. With USC and OCC being on the water for a few week's longer I expected them to do well. UCD and UCSD are both on the same quarter system, so they have been on the water for about the same time. Both programs where at the top of our conference last season so it's nice to be this close. I expect both programs along with Orange Coast and Gonzaga to be the crew's to beat at the WIRA Championships. We won the San Diego Fall Classic beating UCSD by 5 seconds so we have gone from pretender to contender. For the 2 senior's in the boat it might be the first time they have beaten UCSD in four years of rowing. The spring racing is a long way off but it's nice to know there is hope.
