UC Irvine Finishes 2nd by One Shot at Western Intercollegiate

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. --- The UC Irvine men's golf team finished second by one shot in the 62nd annual Western Intercollegiate tournament that concluded Thursday at Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz.

Saint Mary's won the title with a three-round score of 880. The Anteaters, who posted the best final-round score of 294, and Michigan State tied for the runner-up spot with totals of 881 in the 16-team field. This was UCI's sixth top-five finish in nine tournaments this season.

Jack Newman of Michigan State was medalist with a 54-hole total of 4-over 214 (69-67-78) on the par-70 course.

UCI sophomore John Chin (70-74-75) and junior Sean Shahi (74-74-71) tied for fourth place with totals of 219.

Senior Kenny Kim finished 10th at 221 (76-70-75), junior Tim Cha was 21st at 224 (80-71-73) and freshman Bryan Harris placed 64th at 233 (78-76-79).

Coach Paul Smolinski's Anteaters return to action Apr. 11-13 in the ASU Thunderbird Invitational at Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz.
