Khunpol Issara clinched UCI's win Tuesday

No. 58 Anteaters Beat BYU 4-3

'Eaters beat Cougars 4-3

PROVO, Utah - The No. 58 UC Irvine men's tennis team (8-8) defeated Brigham Young 4-3 Tuesday afternoon at the BYU Indoor Tennis Courts.

The Cougars won two of the three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Seniors Ajay Ahluwalia and Victor Lamm defeated Cassidy Mears and Evan Urbina 9-8 in the No. 3 match for UCI's lone doubles win.

The Anteaters won singles matches at the top four positions to clinch the overall team win. Junior Trevor Dobson beat Evan Urbina 6-3, 6-1 in No. 4 singles to tie the match at 1-1. A.J. Young beat freshman Ryan Mayer 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 6 slot to put BYU up 2-1. No. 106 Victor Lamm defeated Thomas Shubert 6-4, 6-2 in No. 2 singles to tie the match at 2-2. Senior Alex Sundling beat Jonathan Sanchez 7-5, 6-3 in the No. 1 match to put the 'Eaters up 3-2. Freshman Khunpol Issara clinched the win for UCI as he beat Cassidy Mears 6-2, 1-6, 6-1 in the No. 3 slot. Daniel Hwang beat freshman Stephen Stege 7-5, 6-4 in No. 5 singles to conclude the match.

The Anteaters will return to action Wednesday as they travel to Salt Lake City to take on Utah at 12:00 p.m. at Eccles Tennis Center.
