Honolulu, Hawaii - UC Irvine senior Aaron Harrell fired a school record seven service aces and junior Jon Steller pounded a career-high 29 kills to lead the Anteaters to a 3-1 (30-28, 25-30, 34-32, 31-29) victory over Hawaii at the Stan Sherif Center Friday.

 

Harrell, a middle blocker fired seven service aces to set the UCI match record.The old record of six was previously held by Jon Steller (2008), Matt Webber (2004), Jarrett Jensen (2002) and Mike Rupp (1999).  Harrell also added five kills and three blocks in the win.

 

Opposite Jon Steller led UCI with a career-high 29 kills with 11 coming in game four. He also recorded eight digs and four blocks. Freshman outside hitter Cory Yoder had a career-high 20 kills and 12 digs. Libero Brent Asuka had a season-high 18 digs, while freshman middle blocker Kevin Wynne hit .706 with 12 kills on 17 attempts and no errors. Outside hitter Cole Reinholm totaled 10 kills and a career-high 11 digs. Jordan DuFault pitched in six kills, while Ryan Ammerman totaled 47 set assists and nine digs. Anthony Spittle had 23 set assists.

 

Cole Reinholm pounded a kill to give UC Irvine game one 30-28. Hawaii led 23-22 in game two before out-scoring UCI 7-3 to take the set 30-25. The Anteaters only had one block over the first two games.

 

In game four, Hawaii jumped out to a 7-4 advantage and continued to lead until UCI caught them at 14-14. The teams remained close until UCI used a Warrior service error followed by a block by Aaron Harrell and Jon Steller to give the Anteaters a two point cushion, 23-22. UCI led 29-27 before Hawaii scored on an Anteater service error followed by a kill by Steven Grgas to knot the score at 29 all. The teams would trade points until a Steller kill was followed by a Cory Yoder kill give the Anteaters the 34-32 victory.

 

Hawaii opened a small two point lead (7-5) in game four and continud to lead until the Anteaters went on a 3-1 run that included kills by Harrell, Reinholm and Steller to knot the score at 25-25. The score was deadlocked at 29-29 when a Hawaii attack error was followed by a Steller kill to give UCI the game, 31-29 and the match 3-1.

 

No. 8 UC Irvine improves to 11-11 overall and  7-8 in the  MPSF, while 14th ranked Hawaii goes to 8-10 on the year and 5-8 in league play.

 

The two teams will meet again Saturday with a 10:00 p.m. PDT first serve.
