Game One Quotes - No. 1 Penn State def. No. 4 Ohio State, 3-1

May 1, 2008

Penn State

Head Coach Mark Pavlik:

"I think they (Ohio State) had a great season. We knew coming into this match it was going to be physical. We played well once we go the rash of missed serves out of us by game two. I think our big hitters closed out the game. I think Ohio State has always played us tough. The Buckeyes kept coming at us. It took us the middle of game three to really get control of the match."

Regarding playing Ohio State in the regular season "I think the advantages go out the window the more you play a team. I think it is tough to beat a team three times in a season. We didn't do anything different tonight then we did during the season against the Buckeyes. If anything, it was at least we had tons of information on them and they had information on us."

"Hopefully Saturday I will want to live here. I think O.C. has done a wonderful job with promoting this championship. We have hosted two of these in the last six years and it is a difficult undertaking. I think UCI and Orange County has done a great job. I know the committee is here and I would endorse bringing the championship back here in the future."

Max Lipsitz:

"The thing with the blocking is a lot of credit has to go to the pin blockers. We practice running the sets and getting where we need to be. Everyone who plays volleyball knows getting blocks really fires you up."

Ryan Sweitzer:

"I was seeing the blocks really well tonight. Coach told me to swing hard tonight. Every ball I swung at, I swung as hard as I could."

Ohio State

Head Coach Pete Hanson:

"We'd like to congratulate Penn State, they played a great match and dexerve their number one ranking. Games three and four, our offense really struggled, Penn State put together a strong run of serves, and really took over on the block. At times played really good volleyball but didn't extend those times enough to beat a really good team like Penn State."

On Ohio State's chances to win after game two
"I thought it was strong, and it was 15-all in the third game, but we got stuck in a rotation where they had a lot of service point, and once they got a separation of four, five, six, they're a tough team to beat."

On how to beat Penn State
"Whoever wins will have to be really good from the service line. Once you get them out of their system you can get some blocks up, get some points in transition. They're a tough team to beat, because they have weapons all across the front row and back. I think it'll really come down to which team serves the best."

Daniel Matthews: On ending his career
"I guess it hasn't quite hit me yet that I'm finished. I guess I want to extend a warm thank you to my teammates, my school, and the coaches. We were 100% confident that we were going to win this one, even against the best team in the country. We just want to wish them the best the rest of the way.

Brett Versen: "They're a bunch of big guys, it's not everyday that you go against an outside that's 6-10. I think we had our moments where we made some big plays, but they're putting four big hands up all the time.
