UC Irvine Ends Season With Loss To Cal Poly At The Big West Tournament

Anaheim, Calif. - UC Irvine ended the season with a 76-61 loss to Cal Poly at the Big West Tournament Wednesday.

 

The Anteaters end the season 7-24 overall. The team finished in eighth place in the Big West standings with a 3-13 record. Cal Poly improves to 12-18 on the year.

 

Rebecca Maessen led UCI with 13 points, knocking down 2-2 from three-point range. She also had two steals in 31 minutes of action.  Seniors Haley Tull and Miranda Forry each added eight points. Senior Annie Mai and junior Kelly Cochran each scored five points with Cochan leading the team with six rebounds.

 

For the game, Cal Poly shot 48.2 (27-56) percent from the field while UCI was just 30.7 (23-75), the fourth worst shooting percentage from the floor for the Anteaters this season. The Mustangs dominated the boards 51-34.

 

Cal Poly was led by Kristina Santiago with 21 points and 11 rebounds. She was 6-7 from the floor in 19 minutes of action. Lisa McBride had 12 points, eight rebounds and two blocks, while Megan Harrison pitched-in 11 points, two blocks and two steals.  Rebecca Tratter added nine points and eight rebounds in the win.

 

Cal Poly went on a 7-0 run to lead by nine (13-4) with 15:03 remaining in the first half and that was all they needed to take control of the game as they led by 18 at the intermission, 37-19. The 19 points were UCI's lowest total for a half this season. The final margin of 15 was the closest the Anteaters would get the rest of the game.
