UC Irvine Ends Season 7-24 OverallMarch 18, 2008
ANTEATERS END SEASON IN FIRST ROUND OF BIG WEST TOURNAMENT: No. 8 seeded UC Irvine lost to fifth seed Cal Poly 76-61 at the Big West Tournament to end the 2007-08 season. Rebecca Maessen led the Anteaters with 13 points, while seniors Haley Tull and Miranda Forry each added eight points. Senior Annie Mai and junior Kelly Cochran each scored five points with Cochan leading the team with six rebounds. ON THE RECORD: The Anteaters ended the year 7-24 overall and 3-13 in the Big West Conference, finishing in eighth place. DUDA DOTS RECORD BOOK: Senior Stephanie Duda ends her career dotting both the career and season record books at UCI. She ranks 13th in UCI career points (1,017), third in rebounds (853) and sixth in steals (173). She ranks second all-time in free throws made (343) and third in attempts (512). In the season records, she tied the school record for most free throws attempted with 189 and was third in free throws made with 123. The forward's 298 rebounds this year ranks second behind her 332 performance in 2006-07. MAI ALSO IN THE RECORD BOOKS: Senior guard Annie Mai also can be found in the UCI record books. She ranks seventh in career assists (280) and is 10th in three-pointes made (73) and attempted (234) all-time. PUTTING IT UP: The Anteaters attempted 1,866 field goals this year, just eight shy of the season record of 1,874 in 1983-84. UCI was second only to Cal Poly (1,974) in shot attempts among Big West schools. POST PLAYERS EARN ALL-CONFERENCE DISTINCTION: Senior forward Stephanie Duda and junior forward Kelly Cochran were both named to the Big West honorable mention team. Duda, who led the league in double-doubles with 16, averaged 11.5 points and 9.9 rebounds in conference games this year. Overall, Duda averaged 12.2 points and 9.9 rebounds per game. She led the conference and was ranked 12th nationally in rebounds. At 5-10, she is the smallest player in the nation's top 20 rankings. Cochran led the team against league opponents with a 12.6 scoring average. She also averaged 7.1 rebounds and 1.0 blocks per game. For the season, Cochran averaged 11.5 points and 7.2 rebounds, which ranked 12th and fifth among Big West players, respectively. DUDA NAMED BEST HUSTLE PLAYER: Senior Stephanie Duda was named the Big West Best Hustle Player by her peers. The 5-10 forward grabbed 19 rebounds against this year, the most by a Big West player and led the league in double-doubles with 16 this season. She has also collected 43 steals. Duda joined Kristen Green (2004) as the only two Anteaters to have earned the Best Hustle distinction. LOOKING AHEAD: UCI will return three of the top eight scorers next year. Second-leading scorer Kelly Cochran (11.5), fourth leading scorer Rebecca Maessen (7.0) and seventh leading scorer Kirian Ishizaki all return for head coach Molly Tuter next season.
