UC Irvine Heads To NCAA West Regional

Anteaters visit Lincoln Hills again

ANTEATERS HEAD TO NCAA WEST REGIONAL: UC Irvine has been selected to compete at the NCAA West Regional May 8-10 at the Lincoln Hills Golf Club in Sacramento. 

The field includes USC, Arizona State, Arkansas, Arizona, Oklahoma State, California, Michigan State, Stanford, BYU, Tulsa, North Carolina, Oklahoma State, San Jose State, Oklahoma, Oregon, UNLV, UC Davis, Fresno State, Oral Roberts and Portland State. Three individuals will also compete.

UCI played at the Lincoln Hills Golf Course earlier this year at the Sacramento State Invitational. The Anteaters finished sixth out of 19 teams with a score of 906.

The top eight teams in each of the three regionals advance to the NCAA Championships May 20-23 at the University of New Mexico Championship Golf Course.

BIG WEST CHAMPIONS AGAIN: UC Irvine won its fourth consecutive Big West Championship with a score of 908 (312-295-301) at the Tijeras Creek Golf Club. It is the fifth league title in the seven years of the Anteater program.

The Anteaters captured the title with a seven stroke victory over UC Davis (915). Cal State Northridge was third (938), Cal Poly was fourth (941), Long Beach State was fifth (942) and UC Riverside was sixth (947).

 

Senior Kim Lorenzana won her first collegiate tournament with a par on the third play-off hole with UC Davis' Chelsea Stelzmiller. Lorenzana had a team best 72 on the final round to finish with a score of 222 (77-73-72).  Lorenzana becomes the third Anteater player to win the conference individual title joining Selaneé Henderson (2006) and Stella Lee (2002).

 

Senior Selaneé Henderson was third after carding a 225 (77-74-74) and sophomore Patty Chawalitmetha was fourth with a 54-hole total of 227 (77-71-79). Freshman Hillary Packard was 20th at 239 (81-77-81), while sophomore Mariko Makabe had a solid round of 76 on the final 18 to move into 24th place with a score of 245 (87-82-76).

HENDERSON JOINS BIG WEST ELITE: Senior Selaneé Henderson was named to the Big West All-Conference first-team for the fourth consecutive year. Only San Jose State's Vbeke Stensrud (1993-96) and UCI's Angela Won (2003-06) have been named first team four times.

MORE ALL-CONFERENCE HONORS: Senior Kim

Lorenzana was  named to the All-Big West first team for the third consecutive year, while sophomore Patty Chawalitmetha was named to the All-Big West second team.

 

Head coach Julie Brooks was named Big West Coach of the Year for the second straight season.  Brooks is in her second year at the helm of the Anteaters.
