Rebecca Kwan clinched UCI's win Saturday

No. 2 seed Anteaters Shut Out No. 3 seed Cal State Northridge 4-0; Advance to Championship

Anteaters to face Long Beach State in championship

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. - The No. 59 UC Irvine women's tennis team (16-8) defeated Cal State Northridge 4-0 in the semifinals of the Big West Championship Saturday at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

The Anteaters won two doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Junior Clare Fermin and freshman Rebecca Kwan defeated Victoria Brymer and Sandra Kukla 8-4 in the No. 2 match. Senior Jessica Broadfoot and junior Ali Borowicz clinched the doubles point by beating Canna Furuta and Kristy Fournell 8-4 in No. 3 doubles.

Senior Becky Becky Bernhard put UCI up 2-0 as she defeated Victoria Brymer 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 1 match to win her 12^th straight match. Jessica Broadfoot put the `Eaters up 3-0 as she beat Nina Jaworowski 6-2, 6-3 in No. 6 singles. Rebecca Kwan clinched the overall win for UCI as she beat Brooke Doane 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 in the No. 5 match. The No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 singles matches were not completed.

This is UCI's fourth appearance in the Big West championship match in the past seven years and all have been against Long Beach State with the 49ers winning the previous three championship meetings.

The Anteaters will next face Long Beach State Sunday at 9:00 a.m. in the Big West Championship match at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
