No. 62 Anteaters Finish 2nd at Big West Championship

Anteaters conclude season with 16-9 record

NO. 62 ANTEATERS TAKE 2ND AT BIG WEST CHAMPIONSHIP: The No. 62 UC Irvine women's tennis team (16-9, 7-1) finished second at the Big West Championship at Indian Wells Tennis Garden.  

 

BIG WEST CHAMPIONSHIP REVIEW: The Anteaters went 2-1 and finished second after advancing to the championship of the Big West Championship. UCI defeated Pacific 5-0 in the quarterfinals and defeated Cal State Northridge 4-0 in the semifinals before losing 4-0 to Long Beach State in the championship match.  

 

 

ANTEATERS RANKED 62nd: The Anteaters are ranked 62nd in the country by the ITA rankings. UCI had its highest preseason ranking ever as they started the year off ranked 37th.

 

ANTEATER LEADERS: Freshman Brooke Bartlett (Fountain Valley HS) leads the team with a 15-5 record. Jessica Broadfoot is second on the team with a 15-7 record. The doubles team of junior Clare Fermin (Yorba Linda/Troy HS) and freshman Rebecca Kwan (San Diego/Torrey Pines HS) led the team with a record of 6-1.

 

SENIOR Becky Bernhard IN THE RECORD BOOKS: Senior Becky Bernhard was ranked as high as No. 81 in the Fila/ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings in 2007. Bernhard has been named Big West Player of the Week four straight weeks and has won the honor a total of 13 times in her career, tying the Big West all-sports record held by women's basketball player Anita Maxwell of New Mexico State. Bernhard ended the year winning 12 straight singles matches.
