Julia Fancher scored three goals to lead UCI Saturday

IRVINE, Calif. - The No. 9 UC Irvine women's water polo team (1-0) defeated No. 10 Hartwick 6-4 Saturday afternoon at Anteater Aquatics Complex.
The Hawks took a 1-0 lead with 4:30 left in the first period as Kirsten Hudson scored on a counter-attack. Junior Julia Fancher tied the match just under a minute later as she converted a penalty throw at the 3:31 mark. Sophomore Kat Plummer put UCI up 2-1 3:52 into the second period. Senior Jessica Lewis gave the `Eaters a 3-1 lead just over a minute later as she scored with 3:02 left in the first half. Ellen Sevigny cut the lead to 3-2 as she scored for Hartwick with 1:49 left in the opening half. Julia Fancher would go on to score two more goals to pick up the hat-trick giving UCI a 5-2 lead with 5:30 left in the match. Jessica Lewis scored her second goal of the match with 3:35 remaining to give the Anteaters a 6-2 lead. Hartwick would go on to add two goals down the stretch, but would be unable to come back from the four goal deficit.
Senior keeper Lauren Machanis had 10 saves for UCI. Keeper Jessica Dorman had seven saves for Hartwick.
UCI will return to action Saturday, February 9th as they take on Brown in the opening round of the Triton Invitational at the Canyonview Aquatics Center in La Jolla.
