NO. 1 UCLA ESCAPES WITH WIN OVER NO. 2 STANFORD 8-7 IN SUDDEN DEATH OVERTIME TO WIN UC IRVINE INVITATIONALFeb. 24, 2008
IRVINE, Calif. - No. 1 UCLA defeated No. 2 Stanford 8-7 in sudden death overtime in the championship match of the UC Irvine Women's Water Polo Invitational Sunday at Anteater Aquatics Complex.
The Bruins took a 3-1 lead with 2:18 remaining in the second period on a goal by Priscilla Orozco. The Cardinal tied the match at 3-3 with 4:56 left in the third period with two goals from Lauren Silver. Tanya Gandy scored for the Bruins and Silver added another for Stanford to head into the fourth period tied 4-4. Tanya Gandy gave UCLA a 5-4 lead 1:52 into the fourth quarter. Koree Blyleven tied the match back up at 5-5 as she scored with 3:20 left. Brittney Rowe scored a power play goal with 2:05 left to put UCLA back up 6-5. Jacquelyn Gauthier tied the match again as she scored with 41 seconds left sending the match into overtime. Koree Blyleven gave Stanford a 7-6 lead in the second overtime period with a backhand shot that rolled into the net. Jillian Krause tied the match at 7-7 as she scored on a power play with 46 seconds left in the second overtime period. Gabrielle Domanic scored for the Bruins with a goal 2:53 into sudden death overtime to give UCLA the UC Irvine Women's Water Polo Invitational title.
The championship match was a rematch of the last years championship match won 8-4 by Stanford.
UCLA keeper Brittney Fullen had 15 saves for the Bruins including five in the overtime periods.
